Business Improvement Districts are becoming a worldwide success story with an estimated 1400 established projects successfully implemented and maintained.
Countries where Business Improvement Districts can be found are New Zealand, South Africa, Jamaica, Serbia, Ireland, America and Canada. The world's first BID was in Bloor West Village in the city of Toronto, Canada in 1971.
To address the needs of the local declining economy, a local group of business people took the initiative and embraced collective working. This ground breaking project has currently led to 60 BID areas alone in the city of Toronto.
BIDs were initially brought to the United Kingdom by the Association of Town Centre Management to as a vehicle for Town Center regeneration. Global players supporting BIDs in Scotland include HBOS who are providing financial support for Edinburgh's BID - this is the first Business Improvement District which HBOS has committed to within the United Kingdom.
The most recognisable Business Improvement District is of course Times Square.
